Appeal of Lux Nuuksio

When nature has settled into its winter stillness, its beauty reveals itself in shades of brown and deep green, and in the sparkling whiteness of snow. Even in ancient times, fire brought warmth to this cool darkness. It was through the energy of fire that our ancestors lived through the dark season. Fire reminds us of the warmth and power of the sun, even when the sun cannot be seen.

The appeal of Lux Nuuksio is rooted in the timeless beauty of fire, which comes into its own and illuminates the landscape safely when lit inside ice lanterns. This winter too, the entrepreneurs, associations and residents of the Nuuksio lake highlands are coming together to create a beautiful experience for themselves and for visitors alike, by lighting ice lanterns across the lake highlands from Friday 6 February to Sunday 8 February.

All actors in the area are welcome to join!

A feel-good idea born at Hawkhill

The first ice lantern event in Nuuksio started at Hawkhill’s cottage village in 2021, when it was decided to organise an ice lantern event under the name LUXHAWKHILL. The ice lanterns delighted both Hawkhill’s guests and locals alike, and encouraged by the positive feedback, the following year we set out to take the same idea forward but across the entire Nuuksio lake highlands area.

The idea was a success. In 2022, 18 organisers from across the lake highlands joined in, and a magnificent 903 ice lanterns were lit. In 2023, 22 events were organised and over 600 ice and snow lanterns were lit. The event aims to spread joy and good cheer, while reminding us all of the pleasures of the four seasons and the importance of preserving them.

Perhaps this year we will reach over a thousand?

Either way, the end of January is a wonderful time to visit the Nuuksio lake highlands. Come and admire the beautiful combination of ice lanterns and the midwinter natural landscape!
