Water Protection in Nuuksio – Our Work for the Baltic Sea

Vastuullinen matkailu Nuuksiossa

Hawkhill is a third-generation family business with its roots in Karelia. After the wars, in 1947, our grandfather Eino and grandmother Toini built a post-war veteran’s house and became smallholders at the small Tuomela farm along Järventaustantie. As a side business to farming, our grandfather came up with the idea of building cottages on a remote forest plot he owned by the shore of Lake Kaitlampi. First he had to build a road, then a sauna for himself, and after that he began building the cottage rental operation.

The cottages rose along the shores of Lake Kaitlampi and for a long time were very simple, true to their era. The following generations have continued to develop the business, and the old cottages have been replaced with new, more modern ones. However, certain fundamentals have been important to every generation, and each has carried them out to the best of their knowledge at the time. These values are respect for nature, water protection in Nuuksio, the peace of the cottage lake, and being part of the Tervalampi village community.

All cottages have been fitted with absorption fields that meet regulations, located at least 50 metres from the shore. We have also limited the water flow in taps to keep the amount of water entering the absorption fields low, which also helps conserve groundwater. We also encourage our guests to use water responsibly.

Restoration of Haukansuo wetland

We restored the six-hectare Haukansuo wetland on our land in cooperation with Metsähallitus. The wetland now functions as a carbon sink, and at the same time we have improved the condition of nearby waters – the flow of bog water from Haukansuo has stopped, and water no longer ends up in the surrounding waterways. The goal is to continue with the restoration of the Kalaton pond stream, so that the water flow from there would also stop.

Students from Vihti secondary school’s Jopo class also took part in the restoration, building deadwood fences from the branches of trees felled to make way for the work. The next step is to continue with the restoration of the Kalaton pond stream.

Pellosta takaisin hakamaaksi

Järventaustantien varrella sijaitsevan peltoalueemme käyttö on myös kokenut muutoksia viimeisen viiden vuoden aikana. Pellon pääojasta on suora yhteys Poikkipuoliaiseen, joten olemme lopettaneet pussilannoituksen vuonna 2021 ja pyrimme palauttamaan pellon alkuperäiseen hakamaamuotoon tai ainakin lähemmäs sitä. Tämä lisää selkeästi pellon kasvien biodiversiteettiä.

Lupine removal

We have also taken on the lupine problem in our fields and meadow areas. Lupine binds nitrogen from the air into the soil through its root nodule bacteria. When the lupine growth dies in autumn, a large amount of nitrogen is released into the soil. In shoreline areas this enriches the soil and can lead to nutrients leaching into waterways, which contributes to eutrophication. We aim to continue mowing and pulling out lupines annually for as long as necessary.

In the Nuuksio Lakeland and surrounding villages we coordinate Lupin Battle events, during which we encourage all parties to remove lupines and prevent their spread. Waste skips have been arranged at Tervalampi village hall, Otalampi and Huhmari, where lupine waste can be delivered free of charge.

Lupine mowing event 2026: 1–14 June – welcome to join!

Hawkhill is a member of the local lake protection association Lasy ry. We want to support the protection of the headwater lakes of the Siuntionjoki river and take part in volunteer work and the association’s activities whenever possible.

In spring 2026 Hawkhill joined the Baltic Sea Challenge network. The Baltic Sea Challenge is a network coordinated by the cities of Helsinki and Turku, bringing together organisations working for the wellbeing of waterways.puolesta toimivia organisaatioita.
